If you or a family member have been arrested for a domestic violence crime, we can help get your case dismissed, or if that is not possible, we can negotiate the best "plea bargain" for you.

Welcome to Devitt & Chelberg, ALC.

If you have been arrested in California for Domestic Violence (sometimes known as spousal abuse), you have come to the right place.

James (“Jay”) Devitt is a Los Angeles based attorney that for 18 years has devoted most of his law practice to helping people arrested for domestic violence.

In fact 60% of his clients never have to go to Court since Jay often gets the case dropped by the Police or District Attorney.

Out of the other 40%, Jay gets about 90% dropped from a felony to a misdemeanor. Out of the thousands of domestic violence cases he has handled, not a single client has ever gone to jail, and only one had to plead to a felony.

How does he do this? Jay knows that the Prosecutor only wants to go forward with serious cases. He will ask you to take certain steps and do some “homework” that will make you look better to the Court and the District Attorney. He will then take your “homework” and combine it with work he has done, as well as write a personal letter to the District Attorney or in some cases call them. This normally results in the case being dropped, or sometimes reduced to a misdemeanor.

Even if you have to go to Court, Jay has been able to convince Judges and Prosecutors to allow you to go through a program that may lead to the case being dropped if you successfully complete the program.

However, this does not work if:

  1. you have waited too long to hire Mr. Devitt and the case has already been filed or

  2. they have pictures of your spouse or ex that are shocking or bloody.

In that case, Mr. Devitt can still probably keep you out of jail, unless you have been convicted before. The Court does not like repeat offenders. Even then, Mr. Devitt has been able to get clients probation, private jails, house arrest, work furlough or short sentences.

The most important thing is to call now! Jay takes phone calls 24/7 and may be able to save you or your relative from expensive bail bonds by getting the Defendant released without any bail at all.

With an average of 18 years of experience each, our attorneys get results for our clients. We offer free consultations via e-mail and telephone on all domestic violence cases 24 hours a day. We'll even come to your home if you desire!
